I created this page as a place to show some of who I am and what skills I have. While I have a variety of interests and projects it is a strong mantra of mine to avoid multi-tasking. I don’t believe we can put our full focus into anything if part of us is busy doing something else at the same time. There is a quote by Philip Stanhope that sums up my feelings on this, "There is time enough for everything, in the course of the day, if you do but one thing at once; but there is not time enough in the year, if you will do two things at a time." I have never really been good at chewing gum and talking at the same time.
I enjoy just sitting back and staring into a sunset or the surface of a lake, but I generally like to keep myself busy. If I’m staying still too long I start to feel like I’m losing productivity. I think time is our most precious and finite resource and requires the most strict controls. I try to organize and utilize my allotted amount of time as most efficiently as possible. I try to fulfill both the needs I have now and lay the foundation for future needs. Time can never be borrowed or saved, you have what you have and it will be spent with or without your cooperation. The better managed my time, the more I will have for the things that really matter in life.
Just a warning, this paragraph will be more technical than the others. If you are aren't a computer geek, go ahead and skip to the next one. Most of my time is spent developing software and working with a computer. I am a full-stack software and database designer, a developer, and systems administrator with a few decades of experience. I have worked across a variety of platforms and systems. Whether in the cloud, or in the closest, during my career I have installed and administered many LINUX servers, both large and small scale. In utilizing both a waterfall and agile development cycle, I am able to quickly produce complex applications. I am a strong advocate of implementing version controls and strong documentation of everything I work on. I consider pre-planning the most important aspect of any project, and will dedicate the needed time for it. I am committed to a strong work ethic and discipline and have managed my own time and worked remotely long before 2020 normalized it. I strive to constantly expand my knowledge base and keep informed of new trends and technologies.
Currently, most of my time is spent on two projects. One is a weather data sharing website called the Weather History Reporter. It can be found at https://weather_reporter.com and is a place that I collect weather data from a variety of stations, with daily updates, and generate a variety of statistical reports on past weather for these locations. The other project is a family photo and history building and sharing site. I call it itsYOURkin and you can find it at https://itsyourkin.com. If you have an interest in being your family historian, or sharing your photo albums, take a look at it, it’s free to use. Both sites are a work in progress and there are many new features and improvements that will go into both of them as time goes on.
I also have an interest in photography. I take nature and some city scenes, I have never really gotten into portrait photography. Over the years I’ve sold one or two of my photos, but it's just a hobby. I like taking a day trip somewhere and just taking photos along the way. I always end up taking several hundred but only a handful will I like and share. You can find links to them on the sidebar of this webpage. If you like some of them feel free to download them and use them however you like.
This road traveled that we call life is quite the journey. I have many interests, goals, desires, and paths I want to take in life. In the end, it’s not whether it was the correct path, a finished path, or even a path at all, but rather what I learned, what I enjoyed, and what it has added to who am I and to others I have had the honor of touching along this path. It is my hope that I keep adding and growing for many years to come, and thank you for taking your time to read this.
